They started building it in 1911 and it opened to the public in 1914. The purpose of the Lincoln Memorial is to remember and honor our famous 16th president Abraham Lincoln. It cost three million dollars to build it. The style is that of a Greek temple. The 36 enormous columns represent each of the states in the Union at the time of the President's death in 1865.
