constructed on May 8, 1744 and finished in 1793.It was built to be the church
for Mission San Antonio de Valero. The church was built by Spanish Franciscan
friars in order to convert the local Indians to Christianity. In the early
1800’s Texas belonged to Mexico. The word Alamo is Spanish for cotton wood.
